Microphones FAQs

I am going to give a presentation. Which kind of microphone should I use?

If you are going to be completely stationary, then it really does not matter very much what kind of mic you use. But, if you plan to do a little moving around, then you would probably be better off using a cordless microphone. These microphones are advantageous because you do not need to worry about tripping over a cord and embarrassing yourself during your presentation. Of course, if you choose to use a cordless mic, it is important to make sure it is properly charged before you use it.

What does a lavaliere microphone do? When would I use it?

A lavaliere microphone is much, much smaller than most of the microphones that you may be used to wearing. These microphones are effective at amplifying adequate sound without being very obvious that they are in place. These mics are often placed on a lapel or a tie and stay pretty invisible. One place where you will often see these mics used is in the playhouse or theater. Actors cannot be expected to carry around microphones in their hands, so lavalieres are often used by thespians to free up their hands.

My microphone doesn’t seem to be working right. What is wrong?

Although it could be a number of things, there is a strong likelihood that it may just be one or two things. Possibly the microphone is not on the right channel or frequency. If this is the case, you definitely will not get a good quality of sound. If it is not the frequency, there is a chance that there could be a problem in the connection of the mic into the speaker jack. If everything is not tight and sturdy, the cord might move around in the jack. When this happens, there could be some undesired feedback.
